The Lesson Plan:
This lesson plan is designed, progressively throughout several units to increase student awareness to ways of thinking that they have simply taken for granted (paradigms) of Western thinking (highly influenced but the Scientific Revolution, Industrialization, Capitalism and Imperialism) and causes them to rethink these assumptions asking if there is a better way to perceive and solve global issues. The ultimate goal of the lesson is to begin by increasing students critical thinking ability and expands into empowering students to implement these changes on a local and global scale. Attached is the summary of the lesson plan plus all of the materials for the journals and even a step by step guide to the formal writing process and guides for the community service assignment (also see project based learning for further explanation and description).

This video clip is designed to raise student awareness to factory conditions in China...and the conditions which many of their favorite devices were made (including iPhones and Xboxs). I generally introduce this video by asking the students if they have any of these products. At the end of the video I have students maintain a solemn demeanor and ask them the journal question about the misery of others lives...warning its a pretty solemn day but good for reflection. Also take note that this video has some off the cuff remarks in the beginning and has bleeps (the cussing has been censored). The video is also only a couple of years old ( a good extension and follow up to this would be to have students research what has been done in this factory and what lessons can be learned by raising awareness.

The Program
Like many of the schools that we visited in India, the Gifted and Talented/Global Leadership program at my school developed organically. I have felt for a couple years now the calling to help gifted and talented students like those described in the program attachment. Interesting enough...as in the Eastern spirituality emphasize on flow and surrender, I was asked to be a part of the Gifted and Talented program at my high school when I returned from my trip (I didn't even know that we had one). So, I decided to take it and run with it. Attached it is the outline of the program that I will be implementing this year, It incorporates 21st century skills as well as global awareness, connection, impact and personal empowerment features. I think this type of program would be great for any gifted and talented program in any school...after all, isn't it these type of kids that will lead the world and solve the problems of the future. I just hope to be able with emotional support and intense intellectual stimulation to help these students find the genius within! I am so grateful for my trip to India which has inspired me and given me the confidence to pursue plans and meet needs where I see them arise (thank you Manzil Academy). I encourage all teachers to follow your heart. Where there is lack in your school or community that touches your heart, find a way to meet that need. It is calling to your heart for a reason. Heed the call, be of service...and trust that the rest will work itself our exactly like it should! ~ Namaste!
